Subject:Meet Staccato
Time:06:56 pm
Here's a picture of Staccato, Dexter, and my slippers.
Staccato is working out wonderfully. He's so playful and loving with the kids. Several of them call him "Thumper" because his tail always whaps the side of my desk when they come in in the morning.
Hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season.
Post some pics!!!

Unfortunatly, things with Dexter didn't work out at the school. I don't know whether it was fear on his part, or being uncomfortable due to the unfamiliar smells of the school or the chemicals in the kids meds or whether it was just too overwhelming, but he bit a student the first week he was at the school. I spoke with Sarah, and managed to talk the superintendent to give him a second chance. We started more slowly and tried a gradual reintegration with Dex, but he bit another kid about two weeks later, and the management team at the school decided he wasn't right for our placement.

Sarah and Megan recommended another dog from the program. This dog had spent some time in a youth placement, so we were hopeful he might feel more comfortable around our kids. I picked him up on September 16th, and he's been very successful with my students. Staccato, an 8 month old Golden Retreiver, still shows some puppy traits, as Matt and Mandi have experienced with Sawyer. He has some trouble responding to commands whenever there's something distracting around. He absolutely LOVES chasing and "killing" dead leaves right now, which makes walking across campus a challenge. He's not "naughty" per se, just a fun-loving puppy. Unfortunatly, we haven't moved into our new home yet, and the cramped quarters aren't exactly conducive to training. However, I have seen improvements in him as he acclimates, and I'm sure it will only improve when we settle into our new home and have more time and space to work with him.

My husband and I fell desperately in love with Dexter, so we were allowed to adopt him, thank goodness.

It's been over a month since we all brought the dogs home. I hope everyone is doing as well as Daniel and Beijing. She is doing great in high school, and although the transition has been rough for all the humans involved, she is doing her job well. Daniel and I got to see Sarah and meet her for dinner when she was in the area picking up dogs. I hope to hear how everyone is doing...for me it took a while to figure out how to post...hopefully I'm doing it right! Best wishes...Diane

Subject:New to Livejournal?

First you need to sign up for an account. I have had the free account for a year now, and found it is all I really need. You can always upgrade later, if you wish.

Next, add yourself as a member of the community. All communities have a link at the top of the Community Info page reading "To join this community, click here." Clicking this link will give you information on joining the community.

To upload pictures: You need a host. If you have your own website, you already know what this means. If this is beyond your capacity, as it is mine, there are free picture hosting sites. Feel free to search for and use whatever you like, but I would recommend photobucket.com. It is also free and easy for the semi-savy. Then just copy the link from photobucket and paste it into your journal entry.

If you want to know more, you can check the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) under Help on the livejournal toolbar, or e-mail me: dawn.grimes@gmail.com

By the way, gmail rocks, but you need an invite. Want one? I got a ton saved up, so let me know & I'll shoot one your way.
